What are Editing and Rewriting Services?

As a researcher and a blogger, I write a lot of content, day in, day out, I learn about interesting topics, I read through thousands of words, as well as writing a fair few too.

At the beginning of my career as a researcher and writer, I did all of the core tasks myself, which included finding relevant articles (ranging from peer-reviewed papers to books and magazines), synthesising important information from them, and writing elegant, engaging content.. Although completing all these diverse tasks well, took a lot of time, I managed to attain good results, and so I was happy.

However, after learning about editing and rewriting services, everything changed. Almost overnight, I became far more productive as a researcher and writer, and the content I created improved too.

Why, exactly? What could be so transformative about editing and rewriting services? And, perhaps most importantly, what are these services? Well, whether you are an academic, a novelist, a student, or simply a researcher like me, I hope you’ll be interested to know the answers to these questions. After all, if they helped me, they will certainly be able to help you too!

First, let’s talk about editing services. The basic idea of editing a piece of written content is to prepare it for publication by changing it in some way. The changes an editor makes may be limited in scope (e.g., spelling, grammar, punctuation), they may be very extensive (e.g., removing paragraphs or arguments, or altering the written material’s structure), or they may be somewhere in- between (e.g., condensing everything that has been written).

An editing service, therefore, is something that a professional editor provides for a client, and it typically involves a fee. Some editors may charge less than others, and some may even offer free samples of their work to show you how they can improve your document. Other differences also exist between the editing services available on the market, especially in terms of what each editor will do in improving written work.

To give an example, the editor that I regularly use for my blog posts simply checks over my structure, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and also does some light fact-checking. This is super valuable for me, not least because– when I don’t have to worry about my spelling and grammar – I can devote my time to what I am best at (writing another post or doing some positive research).

Second, let’s turn to rewriting services. The term “rewrite” is usually used in the English language to refer to the process of writing something again (e.g., a blog post, an academic essay, or a press release), usually with the aim of changing or improving it. However, a “rewriting service”, such as that offered by many online service providers, is a bit more specific than this.

To be precise, most rewriters will (i) start with a piece of text, which could be anything; and (ii) produce a new piece of text, with exactly the same meaning as the original. The idea of such a service is to generate new written material that contains the same ideas and meaning as the original, but which is essentially unrecognisable in all other areas. That is to say, the text’s semantics will remain the same, but its syntax, structure, choice of words, and – in many cases – its style will differ.

Another term used to describe a rewriting service, therefore, is “paraphrasing”. With this in mind, it is worth thinking about when such services might be useful. In my case (as a researcher), I often hire a rewriter or paraphraser to express the meaning of complex arguments in peer-reviewed articles or books in a clear way. This is very handy because it saves me from reading the original document, allowing me to learn about all the ideas it contains in a faster, more concise straightforward way.

This is why in understanding the differences between, editing and re-writing services, you can select whichever is suitable for your project.
